HISPANIC OUTREACH
Recent census data
indicates a 36% increase in the number of residents who self-identify as
Hispanic in Franklin
County; this increase is the largest increase in any county in
Ohio. The increase
in the numbers of Hispanic residents necessitates the creation of health
services and community programs that are culturally competent and effective at
meeting the needs of this underserved population. Of particular importance is the need for HIV/AIDS
and STD prevention education services, including targeted outreach efforts to
raise awareness, increase HIV/STD screening, and provide individual and group
level interventions designed to increase knowledge, decrease risk taking
behaviors an provide access to needed services.
CATF’s Hispanic Prevention Specialist will accomplish this through:
-
Outreach to individuals, families and
groups at appropriate settings
-
Education about and assistance with
connecting individuals to HIV testing services at the Columbus Health
Department
-
Translation of resources to meet necessary
education and referral information needs
-
Provide consultation to staff, clients and
volunteers about culturally specific issues and available community
services
CATF’s HIV Prevention
Specialist for the Hispanic / Latino communities is a leading advocate for the
community, collaborating with the Columbus Health Department and several
community based organizations serving this growing community.
